Nowadays, smartphones are replacing our wallets, cameras, and even laptops. Taking this technology a step further, a company called Nex Computer is developing a new device called the Nexphone. It's designed to function not only as an Android phone but also as a computer when connected to a screen.
3-in-1 Device: Phone and Computer
In its basic form, the Nexphone is a mid-range Android smartphone. But as soon as you connect it to a monitor, it transforms into a desktop computer. Along with Android, this phone also supports Linux. This gives users a separate desktop option on a larger screen. Its most unique feature is Windows support. Windows 11 can be dual-booted on the Nexphone. When docked, the phone completely transforms into a Windows PC. When you unplug it, it reverts to the mobile interface, which is inspired by the old Windows Phone layout.
What is Docking?
Docking is a technology that allows a laptop or portable device to be connected to a station ('docking station') to transform it into a device with desktop computer capabilities.
Hardware and Durability
The Nexphone is built for rugged use and multi-tasking. It features a Qualcomm QCM6490 chipset. This processor is typically found in industrial and IoT (Internet of Things) devices. The company chose it because it is capable of running Android, Linux, and Windows all on the same hardware. The phone meets MIL-STD-810H standards and has an IP68/IP69 rating, protecting it from dust and water. Additionally, it features a 5,000mAh battery, a 64MP rear camera, and wireless charging capabilities.
Linux and Docking Experience
Nex Computer already manufactures the 'NexDock' (laptop shell), which transforms a phone into a laptop. The NexPhone is the next step in this thinking. It runs Linux as an application, which means it can be accessed even without a screen. However, its true potential will be realized when used with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
Launch Date
If you're waiting for this phone, you'll have to be patient. Nex Computer plans to ship it in the third quarter of 2026 (Q3 2026).
