Indore: The local administration in Indore district of Madhya Pradesh has intensified health and safety measures after multiple residents of the Mhow region reported falling ill due to suspected water contamination. The situation has raised concern among officials and locals alike, especially in light of a recent deadly outbreak linked to contaminated water in another part of Indore city. Authorities have stated that precautionary steps are being taken to prevent the spread of infection and to reassure residents in the affected locality.

Health Survey and Emergency Medical Response

Following reports of stomach-related infections in the Patti Bazaar area of Mhow, the district administration deployed 12 dedicated survey teams to assess the situation on the ground. These teams conducted door-to-door visits and surveyed more than 80 households within a short span of time. The objective was to identify suspected cases early and ensure that those affected receive prompt medical attention without delay.

In parallel, two temporary hospitals were established within the locality, which has an estimated population of around 2,500 people. These facilities were set up to reduce pressure on existing hospitals and to ensure immediate treatment for residents experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

Number of Cases and Medical Treatment Status

According to official figures released by the administration, at least 12 suspected cases of stomach infection have been identified so far. Of these, eight patients are currently receiving treatment at a hospital, while two individuals have recovered and have been discharged after showing significant improvement. The remaining cases are being closely monitored by medical staff to prevent complications.

Local residents, however, have claimed that the number of affected individuals could be higher, estimating that around 24 people may have fallen ill after consuming contaminated drinking water. Authorities have acknowledged these claims and stated that surveys and medical screenings are ongoing to verify the exact number of cases.

Testing, Monitoring, and Preventive Measures

The Chief Medical and Health Officer, Dr Madhav Prasad Hasani, confirmed that blood samples from patients and water samples from the affected area are being collected for laboratory testing. These tests are aimed at identifying the source of contamination and the specific pathogens responsible for the illness.

To strengthen medical support, the administration has also involved local pediatricians along with two child health specialists. This step is considered crucial, as children are more vulnerable to waterborne infections and dehydration-related complications.

Public Awareness and Supply Distribution

In addition to medical interventions, public announcement systems are being used throughout the area to spread awareness. Residents are being advised to drink only boiled water, avoid consuming food from outside sources, and maintain proper hygiene. These announcements are being repeated regularly to ensure the message reaches every household.

The administration has also begun distributing essential supplies such as ORS packets, glucose, zinc supplements, and chlorine tablets. These items are intended to help residents manage symptoms and disinfect stored water until the issue is fully resolved.

Context of Previous Water Contamination Incident

The current response has been shaped by a tragic incident reported last month in the Bhagirathpura area of Indore, where several people fell ill and multiple deaths were linked to water contamination. While local residents in that area claimed that the outbreak had resulted in 25 deaths, an official status report submitted by the state government to the High Court on January 15 confirmed seven deaths, including that of a five-month-old infant.

Officials have emphasized that lessons learned from the previous incident are guiding the current strategy in Mhow, with a focus on early detection, transparent communication, and rapid medical response to avoid any loss of life.
