After 10th grade, most students pursue engineering, IT, or prepare for government jobs, but very few students have accurate information about exciting and global career options like the Merchant Navy. The Merchant Navy is not just a job, but an international career that offers the opportunity to work and travel around the world by sea. Here's how you can build a career in the Merchant Navy after 10th grade.

What is the Merchant Navy?

The Merchant Navy is the sector that involves working on cargo ships, tankers, container ships, and passenger vessels. These ships transport goods and passengers from one country to another. People working in the Merchant Navy are responsible for the operation, machinery, navigation, and safety of the ship while at sea.

What studies are required for the Merchant Navy after 10th grade?

If a student has passed 10th grade and wants to join the Merchant Navy, they must have passed 10th grade with Mathematics and Science as compulsory subjects. After 10th grade, students can typically pursue courses like GP Rating (General Purpose Rating), which provides basic training in both deck and engine departments. This course opens the door to entry-level jobs on a ship. Students who want to become officers later on study Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) in 12th grade and then pursue a diploma or degree course.

Eligibility for the Merchant Navy

To build a career in the Merchant Navy, candidates must have passed 10th or 12th grade, with Mathematics and Science considered mandatory subjects. The age limit for entry into this field is usually between 17 and 25 years. Physical fitness is also extremely important, as working on a ship is challenging. Candidates must have 6/6 vision and should not be colorblind. Additionally, it is mandatory to pass a medical fitness test from a government-recognized doctor before joining the Merchant Navy to ensure that the individual can work safely in maritime conditions.

Working Hours in the Merchant Navy

A job in the Merchant Navy is not like a typical office job. The work schedule depends on the ship's contract, which can range from 4 to 9 months. Daily working hours are determined by shifts. This is followed by a long period of leave, which is considered a major advantage of this career.

How much is the salary in the Merchant Navy?

The salary in the Merchant Navy is considered one of the biggest attractions of this career. Initially, when a student completes their training and starts working on a ship, they can earn approximately ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 per month. With increasing experience and promotions, the salary increases rapidly, and within a few years, it can reach ₹1.5 lakh to ₹3 lakh per month. For senior positions such as Chief Officer, Chief Engineer, or Captain, the salary can be ₹6 lakh to ₹10 lakh per month or even more. Importantly, in many cases, Merchant Navy income is tax-free, making this career even more financially attractive.
