Rainfall And Snowfall: Temperatures across large parts of northwest India are expected to fall sharply over the next two days following widespread rainfall and heavy snowfall in the western Himalayan region. The sudden change in weather has been triggered by an intense western disturbance that moved across the region, bringing thunderstorms, gusty winds, rain, and snow. Cities such as Delhi and surrounding areas experienced brief spells of rain accompanied by strong winds, signaling the arrival of colder conditions.

Western Disturbance Triggers Weather Shift
According to the India Meteorological Department, the ongoing western disturbance has significantly altered weather patterns across northwest India. As the system moves eastward, colder air is expected to sweep into the plains. Meteorologists have warned that a cold day phenomenon is likely to affect several states, with minimum temperatures projected to drop by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius. This decline is expected to be felt across Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and parts of central and western India starting January 24.
Heavy Snowfall In Himalayan States
Over the past 24 hours, heavy snowfall has been reported in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Several mountainous areas witnessed unusually deep snow accumulation, with reports of waist-deep snowfall in some locations. Such intense snowfall events have become less frequent in recent years, making this episode particularly significant. Roads in higher altitudes were temporarily blocked, and daily life in remote regions was disrupted due to snow-covered terrain.
Rainfall Brings Relief To Dry Winter
Along with snowfall in the hills, moderate to widespread rainfall was recorded across large parts of northwest India. This precipitation has provided much-needed relief after an extended dry spell during the winter season. The region had remained largely dry due to the prolonged absence of western disturbances, raising concerns over soil moisture and water availability. The recent rain has helped improve ground conditions, especially in agricultural areas.
Positive Impact On Horticulture Sector
The snowfall has been welcomed by horticulturists and farmers in the Himalayan region. A healthy snow cover is considered essential for stone fruit crops such as apples, cherries, and apricots. Snow acts as a natural reservoir of moisture and gradually releases nutrients into the soil as it melts, supporting better crop yield during the growing season. Experts believe this snowfall could benefit orchard health in the coming months.
Strong Winds And Temperature Fluctuations
The influence of the western disturbance was also felt strongly across the plains. Thunderstorms accompanied by squally winds swept through several regions. Wind speeds ranging between 60 and 90 kilometers per hour were recorded at isolated locations in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab. Meanwhile, gusts reaching 30 to 60 kilometers per hour affected Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttarakhand. These strong winds caused a temporary rise in daytime temperatures by nearly 4 degrees Celsius in many areas before the expected cooling trend sets in.
Fog And Cold Wave Warning Issued
Weather officials have also issued warnings for dense to very dense fog during morning and nighttime hours over the next two days. Pockets of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh are likely to experience reduced visibility, which may impact road and rail transport. Additionally, cold wave conditions are expected in Himachal Pradesh and parts of Punjab and Haryana, increasing the risk of cold-related discomfort, especially for vulnerable populations.
Outlook For The Coming Days
As the western disturbance moves away, colder air masses are expected to dominate the region. Residents are advised to prepare for chilly mornings and nights, while farmers are encouraged to take precautions to protect crops from frost. The IMD continues to monitor the evolving weather conditions and has urged people to stay updated with local forecasts.
