New Delhi, 24 January. The controversy that arose after the release of Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) got a temporary closure on Saturday, when the International Cricket Council (ICC) officially showed the Bangladeshi team out of the proposed T20 World Cup next month and confirmed the inclusion of Scotland in the tournament as its replacement. ICC has written a letter and informed Bangladesh in this regard.
Scottish team will play with England, West Indies, Nepal and Italy in Group C.
After Bangladesh’s exit, Scotland has now been given a place in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Scotland has been included in Group C, where it will face teams like England, West Indies, Nepal and Italy.
Bangladesh lost in ICC voting
It is noteworthy that the tussle between Bangladesh and ICC has been going on for about three weeks. Bangladesh was adamant on the demand that it would not play its World Cup matches in India and its matches should be shifted to Sri Lanka. But ICC had made it clear that it would have to play matches in India only.
Ultimately, in the ICC Board voting, Bangladesh’s matches in India were approved with a majority of 14-2. An independent security assessment rated the threat level as ‘low to moderate’.
Controversy started after Mustafizur was thrown out of IPL
This whole controversy started after the IPL auction, when KKR included Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman in their team for a hefty sum of Rs 9.20 crore, but it was opposed in India because there were continuous reports of atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh. After this BCCI released Rahman from IPL.
Bangladesh had demanded to shift its World Cup matches to Sri Lanka.
This decision of BCCI enraged the Bangladesh Board and it talked about boycotting the World Cup. BCB wrote a letter to ICC saying that it will not play its matches in India. He demanded to shift his matches to Sri Lanka or Pakistan.
Bangladesh argued that there could be a threat to the safety of its players in India. But the ICC denied any potential threat in its security report. Ultimately ICC made it clear that Bangladesh will have to play matches in India. If this does not happen then it will be removed. When Bangladesh did not budge from its stubbornness, ICC conducted voting and in that too Bangladesh lost and now Bangladesh has been replaced by Scotland.
