The Australian Open is taking serious shape now, with some players already into the fourth round in Melbourne. World No. 1s Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka won on Friday, as did Daniil Medvedev, Victoria Mboko, Learner Tien, and Tommy Paul.

But it was much tougher going for those competing on Saturday, as temperatures reached around 38 degrees Celsius. Play was brought forward in a bid to get matches done before the extreme temperatures set in. Madison Keys and Jessica Pegula earned quick wins, but two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner has been in all sorts of trouble against Eliot Spizzirri.

The No. 2 seed in the men's draw dropped the first set, ending his run of 16 straight sets won in Melbourne Park, and argued a time violation early in set two. Sinner then started cramping early in the third set before play was briefly halted so the roof could be closed, but he went on to win 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-4. All matches on outdoor courts were also suspended for several hours as the heat stress scale has reached its highest point, 5.
