The teenage son of a Wimbledon champion was spotted alongside Roger Federer's daughters in the crowd at the Australian Open. Cruz Hewitt, the middle child of Aussie tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt, was in the crowd to watch Jannik Sinner beat Hugo Gaston in the first round on Tuesday. The reigning champion made light work of his French opponent to secure a straight-sets victory.

Cruz enjoyed the match on Rod Laver Arena from the stands, wearing a white shirt and grey shorts. He was seated next to Federer's teenage twin daughters Myla and Charlene Federer. The trio looked in good spirits as they chatted while watching the action, though Cruz's father Lleyton was nowhere to be seen.

It came after Cruz was dumped out of Australian Open qualifying, being defeated by Michael Zheng in straight sets. His parents Lleyton and Bec were in attendance to witness their son's 6-3 6-3 defeat in front of a lively home crowd.

Despite matching Zheng for much of the first set, which remained on serve for the opening six games, Cruz lost momentum after his serve was broken midway through.

The American started the second set strongly with an early break, but the Aussie managed to claw back some ground with two breaks of his own.

Cruz's inability to control his own serve led to his downfall, with the 17-year-old making six double faults over the course of the one-sided contest.

The disappointing result marked the second consecutive Australian Open where Cruz has been knocked out in the first round of qualifying.

Lleyton, meanwhile, breezed through qualifying at the same tournament as a 15-year-old wildcard back in 1997. He went on to win the US Open in 2001 before triumphing at Wimbledon the following year.

Cruz doesn't tend to pay much attention to the comparisons between himself and his dad, insisting in 2024 that he was only focused on his own career.

Speaking to reporters at the Newcombe Medal two years ago, he said: "It is what it is, but I don't really mind. It just drives me to be better."

Cruz has been dealing with those comparisons throughout most of his life, with Lleyton taking steps to ease expectations when quizzed on the external pressure faced by his son.

"Oh, they've already been there, ever since he picked up a racket," he said. "He's just got to enjoy it as much as possible and make it fun. He's been doing great so far."
