Wetherspoon has revealed the 11 UK locations where it will open, as well as its first-ever pub outside of the UK and Ireland. It has also confirmed the opening dates, all coming within the next six months. The first new opening will happen in a matter of weeks, opening in one of the most popular Spanish holiday destinations for Brits. The chain's first pub in continental Europe, located in Alicante Airport, will open on Monday, February 9.
This is the first of the new Wetherspoon pubs that will open in the coming months. It will be located in the departure section of the airport, meaning holidaymakers can mark the end of their holidays before flying home to Britain. It will be followed by a brand new 485-seater boozer in Bath, Somerset, which will be the second of the chain's venues in the historic city. All of the new pubs will be open by July 21. Wetherspoon currently operates more than 800 venues across the country, having opened its first pub in London in 1979.
The new Wetherspoon in Bath opens on March 3, along with a new pub in Flookburgh (Cumbria). That is soon followed by a new venue in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.
Following that is a new Wetherspoon in Blackpool, opening on March 31 and four brand new ones at a Haven Holiday Camp in Hayle, Cornwall, on April 2, just in time for the busy Easter bank holiday weekend.
On May 25, a new Wetherspoon will open on the grounds of Birmingham University. Lastly, Edinburgh will welcome another Wetherspoon on July 21.
The Spanish location, which will be called the Castell de Santa Barbera, is part of the chain's expansion plans for outside the UK. Wetherspoon founder and chairman Sir Tim Martin said the plan marks the beginning of the company's plans to open 30 new pubs in its current financial year.
The brand new Wetherspoon locations and opening dates are:
- Alicante Airport - February 9
- Bath - March 3
- Flookburgh (Cumbria) - March 3
- Great Yarmouth - March 24
- Blackpool - March 31
- Hayle, Cornwall (four at Haven Holiday Parks) - April 2
- Fareham - April 7
- Birmingham University - May 25
- Edinburgh - July 21
The exciting new Spanish site will be open seven days a week from 6am until 9pm and will serve traditional pub fare, like what's available in the UK. However, there will also be locally inspired food and drinks on the menu.
Sir Tim said: "We are very much looking forward to opening our first overseas pub. We believe it will be popular with people travelling home from Alicante airport. We aim to open a number of pubs overseas in the coming months and years, including those at airports."
