Vigil first debuted in 2021 and followed Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva as she investigated a death on board a nuclear-powered submarine. As she encountered problems with the Royal Navy, MI5, the British Security Service and even those on board the submarine, viewers were gripped.

Amy later returned in series two when she was sent to the Al-Shawka Air Base in the Kingdom of Wudyan and uncovered a conspiracy. A third season was swiftly confirmed as the BBC revealed it will be set an Arctic research station where Amy will investigate the death of a British Special Forces officer.

Fans of the BBC series have been patiently waiting for the show to return and now, lead actor Suranne Jones has shared a significant update.

On her official Instagram account, she posted a sneak-peek of the new series. Amy and her partner Inspector Kirsten Longacre can be seen standing close to one another in front of a frosted window. What are they discussing?

Suranne captioned the snap: "And that's a wrap on Vigil III," and "Love you Rose Leslie."

Fans were quick to comment on the snap, with one writing: "We are all very much looking forward to revisiting the world of Silvacre. I hope that you didn't have to be locked in another torpedo hold. Thank you for representing this relationship so beautifully and with such compassion (and accuracy)."

Another added: "Can't wait! And I'm certainly hoping for a happy ending."

A third shared: "Can't wait! This is such an important show, especially now," while someone else commented: "This show is so important to me! Thank you all for making it!!"

With the third season now wrapped surely there's not too long to wait until it hits TV screens.

Vigil series one and two is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
