The entire music industry is in shock after hearing the heartbreaking news of the death of celebrated composer and singer Abhijit Majumdar. Known for his soulful songs and chart-busting compositions Majumdar’s demise at the age of 54 has left fans colleagues and the film fraternity devastated. Besides being an artist he was also an emotion for millions who grew up listening to his songs. His untimely death has left an irreplaceable void in the industry. What was the cause of Abhijit Majumdars death? According to her hospital bulletin Abhijit Majumdar had a cardiac arrest at 7:43 am on Sunday. He was immediately given CPR as per ACLS protocol. However “despite all resuscitation efforts he could not be revived and he was clinically declared dead at 9:02 am” the bulletin stated. Long medical battle before his passing Before succumbing to death from cardiac arrest Majumdar had been battling severe health complications for months. He was admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar in a comatose state on September 4 last year. As per the hospital bulletin he was suffering from multiple comorbid conditions including hypertension hypothyroidism chronic liver disease due to osmotic demyelination syndrome (both pontine and extrapontine: progressive disease) pneumonia (HAP) bloodstream infection (Acinetobacter) dyselectrolytaemia (hypokalaemia hypophosphataemia hypomagnesaemia) and nutritional deficiency (vitamin D folic acid). Shifted from ICU after showing signs of recovery He was treated in the Medical ICU for a long time and later shifted back to the medicine ward (E6 – Isolation Room) on November 10 for continuity of care. Hospital sources said “He was conscious and followed simple commands on a tracheostomy tube with stable vitals and was planned for discharge. However he could not be discharged due to family/personal reasons.” Health deteriorated after a fresh infection Later Majumdar developed a fever (infection) on January 23. While the condition was managed as per protocol he did not respond to treatment and went on to develop refractory septic shock which critically deteriorated his condition and ultimately led to his demise. A musical legacy that shaped Odia cinema In his career span Abhijit Majumdar composed music for several blockbuster Odia films and enjoyed a massive fan following across the state. From romantic songs to emotional compositions his songs defined an era in Odia film music. An irreplaceable loss to the industry Abhijit Majumdar is no more with us now. He will always be remembered as a legend who gave Odisha some of its most unforgettable songs and he will always stay alive in our memories through the melodies he created.
