Brooklyn Beckham's feud with his family exploded in spectacular fashion on this week when he took to Instagram to make a series of stunning allegations against his parents, and reveal the 'truth' behind their glossy brand.
"For my entire life, my parents have controlled narratives in the press about our family," he claimed in a six-page statement. "The performative social media posts, family events and inauthentic relationships have been a fixture of the life I was born into."
His bombshell post marked the culmination of a feud that has been rumbling on for a number of years. And onlookers have been quick to note some major similarities between Brooklyn and Prince Harry, who is now all but estranged from the royal family.
• Inside Brooklyn and Victoria Beckham's explosive dance - 'nuzzling, grinding and tears'
Both have been raised with incredible privilege, and both went on to married strong-minded women in Meghan Markle and Nicola Peltz, subsequently quitting the UK to live in California. They have now also both publicly bemoaned the "control" and restrictions of their families.
And that's not all. It's now being reported that Brooklyn is considering writing a tell-all book, very much in the style of Harry's Spare. According to the Daily Mail, a deal is now "firmly in play". Spare, released by Penguin Random House, sold more than 467,000 copies in its first week in the UK and became the fastest-selling non-fiction title in history. Brooklyn has, apparently, taken note, "'He's seen how well the book did for Harry," a source said. "Same publisher. Same idea of finally telling your truth. That's not a coincidence."
The Beckhams, meanwhile, are said to understand exactly what's at stake having seen the fallout the royal family had to endure. "They know they have to be careful," the source said. "If they push him, if they deny it publicly or hit back, it only makes him more inclined to go further. They've learned from the mistakes of others. This is a game of chess."
Even before Brooklyn's outburst this week, there was a great deal of speculation about conversations behind closed doors when it was revealed that Brooklyn and his wife Nicola had dined with Harry and Meghan in May last year.
Interestingly, David and Victoria were once said to be good friends with the Sussexes towards the start of their romance. But that all came to an end when Harry and Meghan allegedly accused the Beckhams of leaking stories about them to the press.
It was initially reported that the meal at the Sussexes Monecito mansion was a cosy affair - however, it later emerged that Brooklyn and Nicola had been invited as part of a wider gathering, hosted by CEO of Paramount and Nickelodeon Brian Robbins and his wife Tracy, who are Harry and Meghan's neighbours. According to the Daily Mail, there were over 20 people at the party - and it's understood that the Sussexes did not personally invite Brooklyn and Nicola.
A source told People: "While it was an intimate gathering, there were several additional guests, including VIPs and film executives. Brooklyn and Nicola had a wonderful time and found Harry and Meghan to be particularly kind, caring and generous."
The dinner came shortly after Brooklyn and Nicola decided to skip his dad David's 50th birthday celebrations. The eldest Beckham son also spoke about that decision in his explosive posts this week. "My wife has been consistently disrespected by my family, no matter how hard we've tried to come together as one. My mum has repeatedly invited women from my past into our lives in ways that were clearly intended to make us both uncomfortable," he claimed.
"Despite this, we still travelled to London for my dad's birthday and were rejected for a week as we waited in our hotel room trying to plan quality time with him. He refused all of our attempts, unless it was at his big birthday party with a hundred guests and cameras at every corner. When he finally agreed to see me, it was under the condition that Nicola wasn't invited. It was a slap in the face. Later, when my family travelled to LA, they refused to see me at all."
But at the time, a source close David and Victoria told the Mirror that the couple felt "betrayed" by the no-show. "Victoria feels betrayed by Brooklyn and Nicola because she's done everything she can to make them both feel welcome and Nicola like another daughter. But she feels it’s been thrown back in her face," they said.
"She would normally do anything to avoid a family fallout, but she thinks they're both being unreasonable." The family drama has taken its toll on the power couple, with our source going on to claim: "David and Victoria are at a loss at what to do over Brooklyn and Nicola. For them to miss David's 50th celebrationsis very upsetting in their eyes, as family means everything and sometimes you've just got to do things you don’t want to do when it comes to family."
The source also claims New York-born actress Nicola has different views to her London-based in-laws. "Nicola has a very American way of thinking and refuses to put herself in a situation where she feels uncomfortable even for a minute, regardless of who she upsets – and has encouraged Brooklyn to do the same."
It comes as the DJ at Brooklyn and Nicola's wedding has revealed exactly what happened after the aspiring chef accused his own mum of dancing "inappropriately on" him. Brooklyn claimed" "Marc Anthony called me to the stage, where in the schedule was planned to be my romantic dance with my wife but instead my mum was waiting to dance with me instead. She danced very inappropriately on me in front of everyone. I've never felt more uncomfortable or humiliated in my entire life."
But in a bombshell interview on This Morning, DJ Fat Tony, a long-running friend of the Beckhams said: "There was no slut dropping, there was no PVC catsuit, there was no Spice Girls actions. The word inappropriate - why I said it was inappropriate as well because it was the timing."
He added that Marc Anthony called Brooklyn to the stage and then asked "the most beautiful woman in the room" to join him, before naming Victoria. "At that point, Brooklyn is devastated because he thought he was going to do his first dance with his night. Nicola leaves the room crying her eyes out. Marc says, 'Put your hands on your mother's hips!' It was a latin thing and that whole situation was awkward for everyone in the room."
The celeb DJ added: "I've done an awful lot of Beckham parties in the past, and they are a very dancing close knit family and love to dance, right? So you know, what we deem as 'inappropriate' is not how Brooklyn feels. This is all about how Brooklyn feels. If he feels that it was inappropriate and awkward, it was inappropriate and awkward."
"What's sad is that this is the bit that everyone's taken from the statement, and kind of white washed everything else that went on. It's taken a lot for someone to go to social media, when your life is lived out on social media… he wanted to change the narrative. For all of his life he's been called 'Nepo Baby', and 'he should be grateful that he's got the family name'.. But that's what he was born into, y'know. I think what we're all missing here is the fact that parents have lost their child, and a son has lost his parents…"
