India voted against UNHRC resolution condemning actions in Iran, Tehran expressed gratitude

New Delhi, 24 January. Iran has thanked India for supporting it in the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). Iran’s Ambassador to India Mohammad Fathali expressed gratitude to India after voting against a resolution to Iran during a special session of the UNHRC. The resolution was passed during the 39th special session of the council on Friday.

Mohammad Fathali thanked the Government of India for its stand at the UN on X. He wrote, ‘I express my heartfelt gratitude to the Government of India for its principled and steadfast support of the Islamic Republic of Iran at the UNHRC, including opposing an unjust and politically motivated resolution. This stance reflects India’s commitment to justice, multilateralism and national sovereignty.

UNHRC proposal of

The resolution was passed with 25 countries in favor, seven against and 14 abstaining. It criticized Iran for its handling of the nationwide protests that began on December 28. The resolution expressed concern over the deaths of a large number of people, including children, injuries to many others and the arrest of thousands of people during the protests.

As part of the resolution, the UNHRC extended the mandate of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran for two more years. It also extended the tenure of the Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran by one year. The council also called for an immediate investigation into the way the protests were handled.

“The UNHRC adopted resolutions extending the mandate of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran for two years and the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran for one year,” a statement issued by the UNHRC said. The resolution also called for an immediate investigation by a fact-finding mission into the suppression of nationwide protests starting from December 28, 2025.’

The statement further said, ‘It urges the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran to respect, protect and fulfill its human rights obligations and to take all necessary measures to prevent and prevent extrajudicial killing, other forms of arbitrary deprivation of life, enforced disappearance, sexual and gender-based violence, arbitrary arrest and detention, solitary confinement and torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, including against peaceful protesters. India and Iran are in contact

Last week, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had spoken to Iranian Foreign Minister Syed Abbas Araghchi on phone. The two leaders discussed the changing situation in the region. Jaishankar said in a post on X, ‘Received a call from Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi. We discussed the changing situation in and around Iran.

Travel advisory issued for Indians

Soon after that conversation, India issued a new advisory asking its citizens to avoid traveling to Iran due to recent developments. “In view of the ongoing developments in Iran, Indian citizens are once again advised to avoid travel to the Islamic Republic of Iran until further notice,” the advisory said.

The government also advised Indian citizens and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) already present in Iran to remain vigilant. They were asked to avoid protest areas, keep an eye on local updates and stay in touch with the Indian Embassy in Tehran. Indian citizens living in Iran were also urged to register at the Embassy if they have not done so yet.
