Washington: US President Donald Trump’s fixation on Greenland has now reached the level of memes and AI images. Despite temporarily halting proposed tariffs on Europe, Trump’s interest in Greenland is showing no sign of waning. On Saturday, the White House shared an AI-generated photo in which 79-year-old Trump is seen walking with a penguin in a snowy area, with the caption “Embrace the penguin”. The post created a stir on social media and has reignited the international debate over Greenland.
The ‘golden ticket’ of national security?
Trump has been repeatedly reiterating for the last several months that Greenland is very important for America’s security. He had earlier warned Denmark that military options were also open if an agreement was not reached. Greenland is currently a semi-autonomous territory under Denmark. After these statements of Trump, Denmark and many European countries strengthened their military presence there, which increased the tension in US-Europe relations.
From tariff threat to agreement?
The controversy deepened when Trump announced the imposition of 10% tariffs on several EU countries and Britain by linking the Greenland issue. But he put these tariffs on hold after meeting NATO chief Mark Rutte during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Trump claims that soon there will be a framework regarding Greenland in which both America and Europe will benefit—especially through the ‘Golden Dome’ missile defense system.
AI Images: Trump’s new strategy
Trump has become expert in conveying messages through images made from AI. Earlier he had shared a picture in which Greenland was shown as a part of America, Trump was seen planting the flag, along with JD Vance and Marco Rubio. Another image showed an expanded map of the Americas, including Greenland, Canada and Venezuela. People are laughing at the new penguin image because penguins aren’t actually found in Greenland—they live in the Southern Hemisphere. Nevertheless, the post went viral and a flood of memes followed.
‘Nothing will have to be paid’-Trump’s claim
Trump recently said that America will not have to pay any price for Greenland. He explained that the US would simply build the Golden Dome Defense System, and in return would get full access—especially to military and mineral resources. “We will get everything without any cost,” he says.
Growing uneasiness in Europe, turmoil in markets
There is an atmosphere of concern in Europe due to Trump’s statements and tariff threats. Despite his lengthy speech in Davos and the NATO meeting, concrete details of the agreement have not emerged. Global markets were seen as volatile, and European leaders are calling Greenland’s sovereignty a ‘red line’.
This ‘Penguin Embrace’ style of Trump may seem like a joke, but it has become a part of a serious geopolitical game.
