Nationwide guidance 16 million customers may want to note

Scammers are increasingly impersonating banks, with the typical person now receiving approximately 8 dodgy calls each month, says Nationwide, which has 16 million members. These con artists frequently put pressure on their targets to reveal personal information, provide security codes, grant remote device access, or transfer funds to bogus accounts.

In response to this threat and to protect customer money, many UK banks have introduced a simple yet effective call-verification system. This enables customers to immediately verify if a bank call is legitimate or if it is a scam.

The process takes just seconds to do, and could prevent your hard-earned cash from vanishing from your account. In fact, customers who are with Nationwide, Barclays, Monzo, Revolut and Starling, according to Which?,can all access similar tools designed to help identify what's real and what's not.

How to use the scam call checker features
  • Nationwide: Navigate to "More" then "Call Checker." It will immediately confirm your status with either "You're on a call with [name]" or a warning that the caller is a fraudster, alerting "You're not on a call with us."

  • Barclays: Ask the caller to send an "App ID" notification. You'll receive a secure alert directly in your Barclays app to confirm their identity.

  • Monzo and Starling: Look for 'call status' warnings to see if someone from the bank is genuinely on the phone to you or not (Monzo shows this under its security settings, Starling within the payment screen).

  • Revolut: Their "We are not talking to you" feature triggers automatically. If you open the app during a call, it displays a proactive alert if the caller isn't a Revolut agent. For total peace of mind, hang up and use their In-App Call tool.

If your bank does not have a similar feature, Which? says that you can hang up and dial 159. It explains: "When you call the number, you'll hear an automated message asking you which bank you would like to be connected to. Staff will then confirm if the call was genuine, or a scam."
