Ottawa: On Saturday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney urged citizens to prioritize local products and manufacturing in light of a new tariff threat from U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a pre-recorded message shared on his social media, Carney emphasized the importance of supporting Canadian businesses to counteract economic pressures from abroad, as reported by a news agency.
"With external threats to our economy, Canadians have decided to focus on what we can influence," Carney stated at the start of his video.
While he refrained from naming the United States directly, Carney asserted, "We cannot dictate the actions of other countries. We can be our own best customers. We will buy Canadian. We will build Canadian."
Trump, on the same day, threatened to impose a staggering 100% tariff on Canadian imports into the U.S.
He expressed on his Truth Social platform that if Carney believes Canada will serve as a 'Drop Off Port' for Chinese goods entering the U.S., he is gravely mistaken.
Trump warned, "China will completely consume Canada, destroying its businesses, social structure, and way of life," adding that any deal between Canada and China would result in immediate tariffs on all Canadian goods entering the U.S.
In response, Canada's trade minister, Dominic LeBlanc, countered Trump's remarks, stating, "There is no intention to pursue a free trade agreement with China. We have resolved several significant tariff issues."
