One railway station has been named the UK's quietest, with just 68 people passing through in a whole year. Data from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) revealed a Nottinghamshire station is the least-used of all in the UK.

Elton and Orston station, which is located between two small villages, saw 68 people enter and exit between 2024 and 2025. The figure is largely estimated based on ticket sales. It sees the station take a significant drop in the amount of visitors - between 2023 and 2024 there were 212 passengers.

The demand for the station is so low that only two East Midland Railway trains stop per day. These run on Mondays to Saturdays, with one in the direction of Nottingham and the other to Skegness.

Elton and Orston has no staff or ticket station. It first opened in 1850 but over the 20th century, passenger numbers started to drop.

In the latest census, Orston had 512 residents. Despite such little use, railway stations are often kept open as it is easier to arrange for a train to stop infrequently than get permission to close it for good.

Denton train station in Tameside, Greater Manchester previously held the title of the quietest station. It only had 54 entries and exits between 2023 and 2024.

Just two trains serve Denton each week, which connects the area with Stockport and Stalybridge on Saturdays. However, numbers of passengers at the station rose over the past year.

New figures showed 100 entries and exits at Denton in 2024 and 2025. The Office of Rail and Road believes the title of the quietest station in the UK actually sparked more visits.

A spokesperson previously explained: "In previous years, usage at some of the least used stations presented as part of these statistics has increased the following year.

"We understand that highlighting the least used stations within these statistics can encourage people to visit them."
