Karkala: The incomplete four-lane highway work from the Karkala bypass to Mulluru Forest Gate has become a major problem for road users, with frequent accidents reported due to poor road conditions and unsafe diversions.

Local residents said unscientific diversions and half-finished construction have made the route dangerous. On Saturday, four people lost their lives and several others were injured after a private bus collided with a Tempo Traveller at Miyinuru Kambala Cross. Residents said the accident reflects the present unsafe situation on the road.

Despite the highway being only partially completed, heavy vehicles are moving at high speed and violating traffic rules, increasing the risk of serious accidents.

Confused diversion

Residents pointed out that diversions provided near Kariyakkallu Ayyappa Swamy Temple, Kuntibailu Canara Bank area, near a handicrafts unit, and close to Pakkibettu are unsafe and confusing for motorists.

Unscientific raod design near brigde

They also raised concerns over the unscientific road design near the Miyinuru Karimarakatte bridge and the stretch between the church and the bridge. Road work between Moodaru and Kadari is progressing slowly, while there is no proper diversion at the junction where roads leading to Miyinuru temple, Karkala town, and other areas meet.

Land acquisition issues

Land acquisition issues remain unresolved in some parts of the 15.2-km project. Around 10 per cent of private landowners are yet to receive fair compensation, with allegations that outdated rates are being used. Locals said this has delayed the project further and urged the district administration to intervene.

Complete the work before the Mastakabhisheka

With the Maha Mastakabhisheka scheduled in Karkala in 2027, residents said proper road infrastructure is necessary as lakhs of devotees and thousands of vehicles are expected. They warned that incomplete and unsafe roads could affect traffic movement during the event.

Residents also demanded strict action against private express buses operating on the route, alleging that many buses travel on the wrong side at high speed despite ongoing road work. They urged the police and the Regional Transport Office to take immediate steps.

Complete the work in a systematic manner

Passengers are facing confusion due to sudden diversions without warning signs, unclear bus routes, and lack of proper stopping points. Locals said areas such as Kajarabailu have turned into accident-prone zones. They demanded that the highway work be completed in a planned manner within a fixed timeline.
