Leicester City have sacked Marti Cifuentes following a dismal run of form that has left them 14th in the Championship.

The former QPR boss was only appointed in the summer as a replacement forRuud van Nistelrooy but has already been jettisoned following a poor campaign. Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Oxford United proved to be his final game in charge.

It represented Leicester's 11th league reverse of the campaign and leaves them six points off of the playoffs. Fans were left particularly disgruntled following the defeat, with many calling for the end of Cifuentes' reign.

Explaining the decision to sack Cifuentes, Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said: “This has been a difficult decision and not one I have taken lightly. I would like to thank Martí for the total commitment he has shown during his time at Leicester City. He gave everything to the role and worked tirelessly to help us achieve our targets.

“However, I believe this is the right step at this time to improve performances and results, and to act in the best interests of Leicester City Football Club. Martí leaves with our thanks and our best wishes for the future.”

It has been confirmed that former midfielder Andy King has been appointed on a caretaker basis, while the search for the club's seventh permanent manager since 2019 gets underway.

Brendan Rodgers was replaced by Dean Smith during the club's unsuccessful fight against relegation.

Enzo Maresca then led the club back into the top-flight, only to leave for Chelsea at the end of that season. Steve Cooper and Van Nistelrooy both had disappointing spells in charge last season as the club endured a second relegation to the Championship in three years.

Reports suggested that a board meeting had been called on Sunday in the aftermath of the defeat to Oxford United, with owner Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha in attendance.

Leicester have been blighted by financial issues this season, having not spent a penny on transfers. The club are also subject to a potential points deduction, having been charged for breaching profit and sustainability rules.

Leicester are back in action next Saturday as they welcome relegation-threatened Charlton Athletic to the King Power Stadium.
