A popular hotel has collapsed into administration and is no longer taking bookings. The Maycliffe hotel in Torquay was a popular option for those needing 'cheap' or 'good for value' accommodation to stay in. However, just a few days ago, on January 22, Edward M Avery-Gee and Daniel Richardson were appointed as joint administrators, and guests can no longer make reservations to stay at the seaside hotel.
A message on hotel and travel platform, Booking.com, reads: "We're sorry, but this property isn't taking reservations on our site right now. Don't worry, you can find tons of other nearby properties right here."
Similarly, on alternative websites, such as Devon Hotels and Hotels in Torquay, when entering any booking dates, it informs visitors that there are no available hotel rooms and to "try other dates".
The hotel received a modest rating on Booking.com and Google, with most guests praising its low prices and cleanliness.
On Booking.com, one person wrote: "Spotlessly clean and comfortable. Parking never an issue. Amazing views. Very easy check-in system with details well in advance of our arrival."
However, while still happy with their stay, one visitor described it as "outdated", another said it was "basic", and others were not impressed with the lack of mirrors in the room.
But after some remodelling, the location which housed the Maycliffe Hotel is now the Hilltop Haven, described as "one of the premier hotels in Torquay" on its website.
The website reads: "Just a pleasant stroll from the Torquay Seafront, Hilltop Haven offers an unparalleled base for discovering the captivating charm and exciting adventures that await in Torquay, the celebrated hometown of Agatha Christie and the inspiration behind many of her renowned novels. Hilltop Haven has been newly renovated and updated with modern features."
The three-floor hotel features 24 studio apartments that accommodate single travellers, couples and families. They all feature free Wi-Fi and a flat-screen TV, and air conditioning. Some studios also have a "laptop-friendly space" that guests can use for work or studying.
The hotel is also currently running a deal where those who book directly on its website can save up to 10%.
