I.S., the pillar of Indian cricket administration. Bindra passes away, breathed his last at the age of 84

Former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer who guided the Indian cricket administration for decades I.S. Bindra Died on 25 January 2026 at the age of 84. His demise has caused an irreparable loss not only to the cricket world but also to the world of administration and sports management.

I.S. Bindra’s association with cricket administration began in the year 1975, spanning more than four decades. He was the President of Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) for almost three decades from 1978 to 2014. In 2015, he was elected Chairman of PCA. PCA Stadium in Mohali was renamed in his honour. Punjab Cricket Association I.S. Bindra Stadium Which is a permanent recognition of his contribution.

In the 1980s, Bindra also served as Special Secretary to the then President of India, Giani Zail Singh. His biggest contribution to cricket administration was in the successful organization of the 1987 Reliance World Cup. He played a key role in opening up the television market for Indian cricket, which greatly increased India’s economic power and prestige in international cricket.

I.S. Bindra was also the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from 1993 to 1996. N.K.P. Along with Salve and Jagmohan Dalmiya, he played a decisive role in the Indian subcontinent hosting the 1987 and 1996 Cricket World Cups. Apart from this, he was also the Principal Advisor of the International Cricket Council (ICC) during the tenure of Sharad Pawar.

However, he has faced some controversies during his career, including criticism over his support of Lalit Modi during the match-fixing scandal and his support of Aaron Lorgate for the post of CEO of Cricket South Africa. Despite this, his contribution in strengthening the structure of Indian cricket will always be remembered.

I.S. Bindra was also involved in an advisory role in the conception and formation of the Indian Premier League (IPL). His influence and legacy are clearly visible in Indian cricket even after his retirement from cricket administration in 2014.

Many sports personalities, administrators and players have expressed deep condolences on his demise. I.S. Bindra will be remembered as the pioneer of that era of Indian cricket which gave administrative strength and economic empowerment to the game.
