New Delhi: In a heartfelt moment that touched millions, veteran actress and BJP MP Hema Malini expressed profound joy and nostalgia over the posthumous Padma Vibhushan award conferred on her husband, Bollywood legend Dharmendra.

The announcement, part of Republic Day honours, has sparked widespread celebration across India, with fans hailing it as a long-overdue recognition of the icon’s six-decade legacy in cinema.

 Hema Malini expressed happiness

Hema expressed her joy while talking exclusively to News9 and said, “I’m extremely happy. He deserves this award. The whole nation is happy. People love him so much.” Dharmendra, who passed away last year, redefined Hindi cinema with his rugged charm, powerful performances, and unforgettable roles in blockbusters like Sholay, Dharam Veer, and Chupke Chupke. ”His contribution to the industry is immense – he’s the soul of our cinema, Hema added, noting his journey spanning over six decades.

Hema reflected on the bittersweet timing of the honour. “They did not give him when he was alive, but anyway, I am happy that Padma Vibhushan is being given to him. It’s a big honour.” She praised the government for recognising his stature, saying, “I know they’re fond of him.” Beyond the silver screen, Dharmendra was a “wonderful human being” whose life lessons inspired common people, families, and fellow actors. “People have learned a lot from him. He has inspired so many – everywhere he set an example,” she shared.

The award marks the end of an era, with Hema poignantly stating, “He has taken away a whole era with him. We have so many memories of him from the movies and the times he spent with us. We miss him. We’re left with his memories. He spent so much time with us; all is now just a memory.” Her words captured the nation’s grief and admiration for the man who embodied strength and simplicity.

When asked about her own resilience amid loss, Hema replied with raw honesty: “You are a strong woman.” She responded, “What is the point of being strong? Joh chahiye tha saath, woh hi nahin hain [The one I needed by my side is no longer here]. And missing him every day.” This candid Hindi reflection resonated deeply, highlighting her vulnerability.

Meanwhile, the Deol family continues to honour Dharmendra’s legacy. Sunny Deol has organised a special show, which his daughters Esha Deol and Ahana Deol attended, celebrating his cinematic journey.

Fans flooded social media with tributes, calling Dharmendra the He-Man of Bollywood and crediting him for shaping Indian pop culture. Hema’s tribute not only celebrates the award but also revives cherished memories of a legend whose warmth and talent will endure forever.
