Data Leak: A new report has sent shockwaves through the online world. It claims that the login details of over 149 million users have been leaked online. This reportedly includes accounts from major platforms like Gmail, Facebook, Instagram, and Netflix.
This information comes from an ExpressVPN report based on the findings of cybersecurity researcher Jeremiah Fowler. According to Fowler, a massive database containing sensitive login information was found openly accessible online.
Which Platforms' Accounts Were Affected?
According to the report, the leaked data includes accounts from several popular online services. It reportedly contains information on not just millions, but tens of millions of users. In total, the database is claimed to contain 149,404,754 unique usernames and passwords, with a size of approximately 96GB.
The Entire Database Was Unprotected
Fowler states that this database was neither password-protected nor encrypted in any way. This means that anyone who found it could easily access it. Initial investigations revealed email addresses, usernames, passwords, and even direct login links.
No Response from Companies Yet
According to the researcher, they contacted the major companies mentioned in the report via email. However, no official response had been received from any of the companies by the time the report was published.
Fowler stated that the information included in this leak is not limited to any single country. The data includes accounts of users from different parts of the world, encompassing almost every type of online service used in daily life. Banking and Crypto Accounts Also Compromised
Most alarmingly, initial sample checks reportedly revealed login details associated with financial services, crypto wallets, trading platforms, bank accounts, and credit cards. This significantly increases the risk of financial fraud and identity theft.
Government (.gov) Accounts Raise Concerns.
The report also revealed that the leaked data includes login details associated with .gov domains from several countries. While not every government account provides direct access to sensitive systems, even limited access in the wrong hands can cause serious damage.
Increased Risk of Cyberattacks
Fowler warned that such a large-scale leak of login details poses a significant threat to users, especially those unaware of the breach. The availability of email addresses, passwords, and precise login URLs can enable cybercriminals to carry out automated attacks such as credential stuffing.
