BBC Radio star, John Randall, has died aged 68 following a short illness. The popular presenter, who hosted shows on Radio Guernsey, had become a regular fixture on the station, having worked there for 25 years.

In recent years, he had the evening slot on Mondays and Fridays in addition to a Sunday afternoon show. The station, which is the local BBCRadio station for the Channel Island of Guernsey, announced John’s death on Monday morning with a post on social media, which read: “John was a familiar voice across the Channel Islands for more than 25 years, known for his warmth, generosity and tireless support for local causes."

It continued: “He will be greatly missed by colleagues, listeners and the community he loved. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time.”

Executive producer of Radio Guernsey, Michelle Danielle, told BBC News that John was “one of a kind” and that “a huge part of us will always be missing”.

Meanwhile, presenter Isla Blatchford said the brodcaster had helped raise £40,000 for a number of charities over the past 20 years.

She said: “I think one of the best things about John was his ability to get people on board to help raise money for all sorts of causes. He could talk anyone into anything it seemed.”

John told the BBC last year that “I love helping people, I really do” and that he enjoyed meeting people and “putting smiles on faces”.

Born in 1942, John, who married wife, Marlene Groom, in 1961, started his career on Offshore Radio in 1988 before setting up Island FM in Guernsey in 1992. He joined BBC Guernsey in 1999 when the station started it’s first local afternoon show.

John later became the president of the Burnham-on-Crouch Carnival Committee, who also paid tribute to the presenter on Monday morning.

“His connection to Burnham Carnival began in 1967, marking an extraordinary 58 years of dedicated service to the committee and the community he loved,” it read.

“John was truly Mr Burnham Carnival — always ready with a supportive smile, words of wisdom and guidance, and many stories of Carnivals gone by.”
