Synopsis

Shipping Corporation of India has invited bids to acquire eight new very large gas carriers, of which six must be built in India and two can be supplied by overseas shipyards. The move aligns with the government’s push to boost domestic shipbuilding capacity.

Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) has called bids to acquire eight new very large gas carriers (VLGCS). According to an expression of interest (EOI) document floated earlier this month by the public sector undertaking, six of these vessels need to be locally built while two can be delivered by international shipyards.

In a corrigendum issued to the EOI, SCI said any applicants having requisite experience of successfully delivered at least three VLGCs, Very Large Ethane Carriers (VLECs), liquefied natural gas carriers (LNGCs) in the last five years are eligible to participate.

“The Applicants have to provide details to their strategy for building VLGCs in India,” SCI said.

SCI said any bidder from a country which shares a land border with India will be eligible to bid in this tender only if the bidder is registered with the Competent Authority. The public sector undertaking effectively reiterated that Press Note 3 restrictions – which keep a check on Chinese investments and participation in sensitive tenders - will apply to these bids as well.
