Luca Toolan has opened up about auditioning for what he called the “biggest role of my life” following his Coronation Street exit - but sadly things didn’t go to plan.
The talented actor shot to fame when he joined the ITV soap in 2023 as school bully Mason Radcliffe. After terrorising Maria Connor’s (Samia Longchambon) young son, Liam Connor (Charlie Wrenshall), Mason was sent to a Young Offenders centre.
He was later released and headed back to Weatherfield, adamant he wanted to turn his life around and get away from his violent family - including brothers Logan (Harry Lowbridge) and Matty (Seamus McGoff).

However, in January 2025, after Mason’s brothers hunted him down, tragedy struck as his brothers ended up stabbing Mason with a zombie knife, tragically killing him.
Since his cobbles exit, actor Luca has kept himself busy. As well as planning to direct his very own film, he recently took part in an audition for what he called the “biggest role of my life”.
On his TikTok, Luca shared a video of him heading to the audition. “POV: Recall Audition for Paul McCartney (Beatles TV show),” was written on the video that included clips of him getting ready and driving to the audition. He said: “I’ve arrived, wish me luck…”
In a follow-up video, Luca gave fans a rundown on how it went - but it didn’t go to plan for the actor. He candidly shared: “I went into the casting office and I’m having conversation with the casting associate just before going into the room with the casting director. She says one thing that throws me off - ‘oh you’re the only Paul we’re going to see today’. Head gone.”
He added: “In that moment I know I’m the first Paul and I know that we’re down to probably about five or six of us max. I’ve got a chance at landing the biggest role of my entire career, what do I do? My energy, my focus completely transfers from the process to now the outcome.”
Lucas explained: “So all I care about in that moment is now okay, I have to impress the casting director, I have to do a good read, I have to make them like me. And this is applicable to anything in life, the moment you take your eyes off the process, the moment you drop the ball and your nervous system goes into loss prevention.”
He went on: “I walk in the room, I speak to the casting director, we talk about the project do the read and it’s flat. It is miles off what I did on tape and I just crumbled. I crumble.

“And it’s a vital lesson I have to learn, is that in order to achieve anything that you want, you have to have a child-like level of detachment. Stop treating things so seriously imagine yourself without them and stop placing all your importance and value on attaining things.”
Luca’s candid confession was met with a ton of support from his fans. One person said: “You have a very wise head on such young shoulders. I wish I had these insights when I was your age. what's meant for you won't go past you.”
Someone else added: “The journey isn't easy but keep climbing, you're naturally talented. Coronation Street lost an amazing actor. Good luck in your future ventures.”
Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX
