On Monday, a devastating fire broke out in a warehouse located in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, resulting in the deaths of at least three individuals, according to police reports. A senior police official stated that the fire, which occurred in the Najirabad area of the Narendrapur police station jurisdiction, was brought under control after seven hours of intense firefighting efforts.
During a search operation conducted by police and firefighters, three charred bodies were recovered from the scene. Shubhendu Kumar, the Superintendent of Police for Baruipur district, mentioned that the victims were so severely burned that their identities have yet to be confirmed. He added that it will only be possible to ascertain if there are any additional victims trapped in the debris once the area is fully cleared.
Initially, reports indicated that six individuals were missing, but the whereabouts of the others remain unknown. After visiting the site, Electricity Minister Arup Biswas informed reporters that confirmation regarding any individuals trapped inside would only be possible once the thick smoke dissipates.
He stated, "A team from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has been called in to break down walls and ventilate the smoke." Biswas emphasized that the confirmation of any trapped individuals would depend on the ability of firefighters and police to enter the warehouse.
The fire was reported around 3 AM and was extinguished with the assistance of 12 fire engines, with control achieved by approximately 10 AM. The cause of the fire remains undetermined, and an assessment of the damage has not yet been conducted.
