The Met Office has named over 80 areas across the UK that could face power cuts this week. The national forecaster issued new weather warnings forsnow and rainin the UK, just minutes before announcing it had named a new storm as Chandra.
Spanning 17 hours, the yellow and amber weather warnings cover large swathes of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The rain, snow, and wind warnings kick off at midnight today (January 27) and will remain in place until 12am on Wednesday (January 28). Up to 50mm of rain is possible in places, and parts of the southern Pennines and southwest Scotland could see accumulations of 20mm in a three-hour period. The weather agency warns there "will be a sharp increase in snow depths with elevation" with areas above 500m likely to see 20cm of snow. The forecaster is warning that drifting is possible in rather brisk southeasterly winds. Peak gusts of 50-60 mph inland and 60-70 mph are possible along exposed coasts.
There is a small chance of gusts up to 80 mph for parts of the Isles of Scilly, Pembrokeshire, and Northern Ireland.
The Met Office has said that there is a good chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
The forecaster said it is easier to cope with power cuts when you are prepared in advance. Consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.
If you experience a power cut, you should contact the electricity Distribution Network Operator (responsible for maintaining physical electricity supplies to your home or business) that covers your area.
