The cold and dreary days of winter can feel endless, but better days are coming. With the winter solstice behind us, the days are growing gradaully longer and it won't be forever until mid-afternoon sunsets are a thing of the past.
Thes won't be changing for a few months yet, but the UK is already climbing out of the depths of winter. As a matter of fact, one UK city will be enjoying 5pm sunsets in January - well before the clocks change. Mark your calendars, we've rounded up when sunset times will be after 5pm and 6pm across the country.
What day sunsets will be after 5pm- January 31: Cardiff
- February 5: Birmingham
- February 6: Glasgow and Manchester
- February 7: London
- February 8: Edinburgh
- February 12: Aberdeen
- March 6: Glasgow and Cardiff
- March 8: Edinburgh
- March 9: Manchester and Birmingham
- March 10: Aberdeen
- March 13: London
The clocks will change on Sunday, March 29 when they jump from 1am to 2am. This 'spring forward' marks the start of British Summer Time until it ends on Sunday, October 25.
Why do we change clocks? The idea of daylight savings time (DST) came from Benjamin Franklin, one of America's founding fathers. There is no scientific reasoning for it - the inventor proposed changing the time to make the most of the daylight so the sunset falls at a later time.
Only a third of the world follow DST, however, as mainly countries in Europe and North America have adopted it.
