A major supermarket has announced huge changes coming to its stores across the UK. Sainsbury's is working with Costato launch new cafes, with the coffee chain investing over £3 million in 11 cafes. This comes after Sainsbury'sclosed all 61 of its cafes in January 2025, leading to the loss of thousands of jobs. The supermarket said this was due to "a particularly challenging cost environment" and that the majority of customers did not regularly use the cafe.

The first of these new Costa Coffee cafes was opened in Farlington, Portsmouth, earlier this month, creating nine jobs. All 11 cafes will create over 100 jobs, with training opportunities for staff. A cafe has also opened in the store in Springfield, Chelmsford, and another will soon open on February 19 in Bridgemead, near Swindon.

The cafes are an extension of the partnership between Sainsbury's and Costa, with the coffee company having over 1,000 Costa Express machines in Sainsbury's stores and petrol stations.

Sainsbury's director of fresh food, Richard Crampton, said: "We know that customers like the convenience of being able to stop for a drink, snack or sit-down lunch while they're doing their shopping, and we think that Costa Coffee stores will offer a fantastic opportunity to do this within Sainsbury's supermarkets.

"That's why we're delighted to be building on our existing collaboration with Costa Coffee to roll out this fantastic new option for customers in our stores over the next year, and we're looking forward to hearing what they think."

This comes after Sainsbury's announced its new strategy for "Next Level Sainsbury's", where it will be prioritising food, Nectar card, and convenience to boost profits.

Sainsbury's chief executive Simon Roberts claimed the plan is "just at the beginning of rediscovering quite what this business is capable of".

The supermarket will halve the prices of more than 30 selected dairy, fruit and vegetable items through Nectar Prices, from January 25 to February 1, in selected supermarkets and online.
