Udupi: A boat carrying tourists for a leisure trip capsized in the sea near Kodibengre beach on Monday morning, January 26, resulting in the death of two persons, leaving one critically injured and several others unwell.
The deceased have been identified as Shankarappa (22) and Sindhu (23). Disha (26) is reported to be in a critical condition, while Dharamaraj (26) narrowly escaped death and is recovering, sources said.
The tourists, who were staying at a local resort, were being taken for a trip from the Malpe Delta Beach Point when the boat overturned at the estuary where the river meets the sea near the Hangarakatta shipbuilding area. There were about 14 tourists on board, and it was reported that none of them were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.
According to reports, the passengers were employees of a call centre located in Saraswathipuram, Mysuru. The boat belonged to a company named ‘Waveriders’ and was carrying a total of 14 tourists. Immediately after the incident, local residents and people from other boats rescued all the passengers and brought them safely to the shore.
Though four persons in serious condition were rushed to hospital, two of them succumbed to their injuries during treatment, officials said.
The incident occurred on the border of Malpe and Kota police station limits. Police rushed to the spot and have taken up further investigation.
However, one of the passengers said that life jackets were provided to all those on board, but not everyone wore them.
