A rare Baggy Green cap once worn by Sir Donald Bradman has made history at an auction in Australia. The cap was sold for whopping amount of 460,000 dollars, which is now the highest price ever paid for a Bradman Baggy Green. The sale occurred on Australia Day at Lloyds Auctions located on the Gold Coast, which generated excitement among cricket enthusiasts and academic researchers.
The unidentified Australian collector emerged as the winning bidder for the item. The buyer established that the cap will not remain in private possession. The artifact will be displayed at a museum for everyone to see. The decision received approval from many cricket fans, who regard the Baggy Green as a representation of Australia’s cricket tradition.
History of the Cap and its Journey
This Baggy Green cap has a special past. Bradman presented the cap to SW Sohoni, who played Test cricket, during their 1947–48 Test series against India. This was Bradman’s final home Test series before he retired in 1948. Bradman concluded his professional career with a Test batting average of 99.94, which remains an unmatched record in cricket.
Sohoni received the cap and his family kept it for more than 75 years. The item stayed hidden from public view and selling until the auction occurred. The cap became more valuable because cricket collectors have scarce opportunities to see objects from Bradman’s era.
Lloyds Auctions listed the item with a note that said:
“Unveil a piece of cricketing history with this stunning 1947–48 Australian Baggy Cap, crafted by Farmer’s Sydney and adorned with the Cricket Coat of Arms.”
The listing also said:
“Cherished in the family collection ever since, this cap links you to Don Bradman’s invincible era and a memorable exchange with the Indian squad.”
The details about the cap made it different from all other cricket items that were sold during the previous years.

Bradman’s Lasting Legacy
Sir Donald Bradman is still widely called the greatest batter in cricket history. His numbers support that claim. He completed 6,996 Test runs during 52 matches while achieving a batting average of 99.94. He achieved 29 Test centuries, which included two triple centuries. He led Australia from 1928 to 1948 and turned the team into one of the strongest cricket sides in the world.
Bradman-related items from his playing days have become national treasures because of this. Baggy Green caps from his era are extremely rare. Only a small number still exist, and even fewer are linked to known series or personal stories. The high expected price of the cap became evident to collectors, but the actual sale price confirmed their prediction.
