Delhi-NCR: A light but visible layer of smog lingered over several parts of Delhi-NCR on Tuesday morning, with air quality remaining a concern for residents. Data released by the Central Pollution Control Board showed that the city’s average Air Quality Index stood at 294 at 8 am, placing it in the ‘poor’ category and indicating continued exposure to unhealthy air.

Smog observed in central and eastern Delhi
Early morning visuals from prominent central locations, including India Gate and Kartavya Path, showed haze settling over the skyline. Similar conditions were reported in eastern parts of the capital, particularly around the Swaminarayan Akshardham temple in the Pandav Nagar area, where smog persisted during the early hours and reduced visibility.
Local AQI levels vary across neighbourhoods
Air quality readings differed across locations, reflecting uneven pollution levels within the city. According to CPCB data, the AQI near India Gate was recorded at 240, categorised as ‘poor’. In contrast, Pandav Nagar registered a significantly higher AQI of 362, pushing the area into the ‘very poor’ bracket and raising concerns for sensitive groups.
Pollution hotspots continue to report high readings
Several monitoring stations across Delhi reported elevated pollution levels on Tuesday morning. Anand Vihar and Wazirpur both recorded AQI readings of 362 and 363 respectively, placing them among the worst-affected areas. Rohini followed closely with a reading of 359, while Ashok Vihar stood at 348. Other locations such as Punjabi Bagh (337), Bawana (340), and Okhla Phase-2 (325) also remained firmly in the ‘very poor’ to ‘poor’ range.
Widespread poor air quality across the capital
Additional stations reflected a similar trend, underlining the widespread nature of the issue. Chandni Chowk recorded an AQI of 319, while Burari stood at 309. Dwarka Sector 8 and ITO both reported readings of 312, and Mundka registered 314. RK Puram posted an AQI of 317, while Narela and Alipur recorded relatively lower, though still concerning, readings of 286 and 289 respectively.
Weather conditions may bring temporary relief
The India Meteorological Department has forecast a spell of unsettled weather through the day, which could influence pollution levels. Rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds are expected at various intervals, including morning, afternoon, and night hours. Thunderstorms may bring wind speeds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour, potentially aiding the dispersion of pollutants. Temperatures are likely to range between 9 degrees Celsius and 19 degrees Celsius.
GRAP Stage III restrictions lifted across Delhi-NCR
In a parallel development, the Commission for Air Quality Management has withdrawn Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan across the region. The decision was taken after reviewing recent improvements in air quality indicators and weather forecasts that suggest conditions may remain relatively stable in the short term.
Authorities urge continued public cooperation
Despite the rollback of stricter measures, officials have urged residents to remain cautious. Given the winter season and the possibility of unfavourable weather conditions returning, citizens have been advised to strictly follow guidelines outlined under Stages I and II of the existing GRAP framework. These measures are intended to prevent further deterioration of air quality in the coming days.
Understanding AQI categories
Under the national air quality classification system, an AQI reading between 0 and 50 is considered ‘good’, while 51 to 100 falls under ‘satisfactory’. Levels from 101 to 200 are classified as ‘moderate’. Readings between 201 and 300 indicate ‘poor’ air quality, 301 to 400 are marked as ‘very poor’, and values above 400 are categorised as ‘severe’, posing serious health risks.
