A software engineer from a Tier 3 college has drawn attention on social media after detailing her journey to securing a role at Google, highlighting years of consistent effort and multiple setbacks before success.
In a series of Instagram posts, Archy Gupta, who identifies herself as a software engineer at Google, described her career path from graduating at a Tier 3 college to landing an L4 role at the technology company. Reflecting on her approach, she wrote that consistency often appears uneventful in the moment, with no instant wins or major milestones, but compounds over time into visible results.
Gupta said she graduated in 2017 from a Tier 3 college in Bhopal, where campus placements were limited largely to service-based companies. Despite the constraints, she believed larger opportunities were possible and pursued every option available, including travelling across cities with what she described as little more than hope.
By November of her final year, she secured a placement at a service-based firm. However, she said she viewed this as a starting point rather than a destination. She then focused on strengthening her fundamentals by working on problem-solving skills, databases and core computer science concepts.
Her efforts led to a referral for an internship interview at product-based company OpenText, held in Hyderabad. Gupta travelled for the interviews, cleared the selection process and relocated within 10 days. While interning, she continued applying for online assessments and interviews in an attempt to convert the role into a full-time position. After months of waiting and several rejections, she received a full-time offer from OpenText just 15 days before she was scheduled to join the service-based company, which she said proved to be a turning point.
Gupta noted that her journey continued with exploration beyond software engineering. She briefly studied data science and completed a machine learning nanodegree before realising her interest remained in software development. In 2019, she received her first interview call from Google but was unsuccessful. She said the experience motivated her to persist.
She continued interviewing and learning from repeated failures. In 2020, she joined ServiceNow, where she began solving one data structures and algorithms problem daily. In June 2022, Google contacted her again. She said she prepared for several months as the interview process extended until October, after which she received confirmation of her selection.
Gupta eventually secured an L4 role at Google. Summarising her experience, she wrote that her journey from a Tier 3 college to Google involved no shortcuts or luck, but years of consistency, belief and sustained effort.
