Calling the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement the “mother of all deals”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the pact marked a “new blueprint for common prosperity”, as India concluded what he described as its biggest free trade agreement to date.
Addressing the media alongside EU's Ursula von der Leyen after the conclusion of the India-EU FTA talks, Modi said India had “today concluded its biggest free trade agreement”, underlining the scale and strategic significance of the deal for both sides.
There is turmoil in global environment; India-EU will provide stability to world order, the Prime Minister added.
He described the day as a landmark moment in India’s engagement with Europe, noting that it was a “historic day” with European Union leaders participating in India’s Republic Day celebrations. According to Modi, the timing showed the depth of political trust and shared ambition between New Delhi and Brussels.
The Prime Minister said the agreement goes beyond trade liberalisation, positioning it as a framework for long-term economic cooperation, resilient supply chains and expanded market access. Referring to it as a “new blueprint for common prosperity”, Modi stressed that the deal reflects converging interests between the world’s largest democracy and one of the largest economic blocs.
Echoing that assessment, European Council President Antonio Costa said the India-EU FTA was the “most ambitious agreement ever concluded for a market of 2 billion people”, highlighting the combined economic and demographic scale covered by the pact.
Summit gives clear message to world that India and EU stand together as reliable partners, Costa added.
