In a major boost to India’s maritime infrastructure, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) today laid the foundation for Phase 2 of the Vizhinjam International Seaport. The expansion includes an additional investment of ₹16,000 crore, taking the Adani Group’s total commitment in the project to ₹30,000 crore—the largest investment by any single business house in Kerala.
Speaking at the ceremony, Karan Adani, Managing Director of APSEZannounced ambitious targets for the port. “With this investment, Vizhinjam will scale from a capacity of 1 million TEUs to 5.7 million TEUs by 2029,” Adani stated, outlining the roadmap to make Vizhinjam the largest transshipment port in the Indian subcontinent.
Bipartisan Political Support Acknowledged In a significant portion of his address, Mr. Adani highlighted the “continuity of vision” across Kerala’s political spectrum. He paid tribute to the late former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, acknowledging his role in awarding the project and laying its groundwork.
Simultaneously, he heaped praise on current Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for his unwavering support during the execution phase. “The Chief Minister has been our biggest asset that an investor can ask for when implementing such a large greenfield project,” Adani said, thanking the state leadership for maintaining administrative discipline and resolve.
Operational Milestones The port has already set records in its initial phase. According to APSEZin just 15 months of commercial operations, Vizhinjam became the fastest Indian port to handle one million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units).
Strategic Importance The event was attended by Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, Union Minister for Ports Sarbananda Sonowal, and Opposition Leader VD Satheesan. Adani termed the gathering a symbol of “cooperative federalism,” noting that port-led development remains a strategic pillar under the Prime Minister’s vision.
“Vizhinjam stands at the intersection of history and the future. We are not merely expanding a port; we are expanding a national capability,” Adani concluded, promising that the facility would serve as a “lighthouse” for how future Indian ports should operate technologically.
