Samira Vishwas | January 28, 2026 12:24 AM CST

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is on the target of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over Assamese Gamcha ‘Gamosa’. BJP has claimed that Rahul Gandhi has refused to wear the Assamese ‘gamosa’ given to all the guests at the reception organized by President Draupadi Murmu. BJP says that this is an insult to the public sentiments of Assam. BJP is now making it a political issue. BJP also alleged that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi showed disrespect towards President Draupadi Murmu by not wearing ‘gamosa’. Congress has hit back by saying that even Defense Minister Rajnath Singh was not wearing ‘Patka’.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma has said that Rahul Gandhi should apologize for not wearing the traditional Gamchha. He says that this is an insult to the people of the North-East. He claimed that times may change, but the attitude of the real Supreme Leader of the Congress Party, Rahul Gandhi, has not. He has said that Rahul Gandhi insulted the North-East by not wearing a gamchha in a function organized by President Draupadi Murmu.

Why did Congress become everyone’s target?

It was claimed by some journalists that except Rahul Gandhi, all the guests wore the Gamosa presented to them at the event. Referring to these media reports, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala was the first to pay attention. He wrote on X, ‘Shameful. Rahul Gandhi insulted the North-East and also disrespected the Honorable President.

Amit Malviya wrote, ‘At the at-home reception held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, everyone proudly celebrated the North-East. From the Prime Minister to European Union leaders and foreign ambassadors, all guests wore the traditional Gamcha as a symbol of respect and inclusion. Rahul Gandhi did not wear it. The President reminded him twice. Respect for India’s diversity is not selective. This is an election.

What did Congress say?

Congress media and publicity department chief Pawan Kheda posted a picture of Defense Minister Rahul Gandhi. He posted Rajnath Singh’s picture and asked Assam Chief Minister Himanta whether he would curse Rajnath Singh for not wearing Gamchha and seek an apology. He wrote, Himant Vishwa Sharma, will you ask Rajnath Singh also to apologize? Or your entire strategy to deal with the anti-incumbency wave is to raise such absurd issues? Congress MP Manickam Tagore also cornered BJP on this issue and asked the Assam Chief Minister why Defense Minister Rajnath Singh did not wear the Gamchha of the North-East.

What is BJP’s answer?

Congress has accused Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge of insulting him. Congress has said that he was made to sit in the third row during the Republic Day function on the path of duty. Many Congress leaders have shared pictures of their leaders sitting in the back rows during the ceremony. They are calling this a violation of protocol. Countering this, Shahzad Poonawala accused the Congress of putting the Gandhi family’s ‘rights and ego’ as well as ‘family and position’ above the public. They consider the family system above the constitutional system.
