Al Roker’s three-decade run on NBC’s Today show stands as one of morning television’s most enduring success stories. Since joining the program in 1996, he has become a trusted and familiar presence for millions of audiences. As he celebrates his 30-year anniversary, questions about retirement naturally follow, but Roker continues to be focused on the present.
Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE ahead of the anniversary, Roker responded to the question fans inevitably ask when someone occupies three decades in the same position. “Well, let’s put it this way. I haven’t thought about retirement,” he stated, before adding with a laugh, “Somebody at NBC, that might be a different story.” He further said, “I love what I do. I feel good. I love this job. I love doing it. At some point I guess I won’t be, but I don’t feel like that’s anytime soon, so I’m just gonna keep going.”
Three Decades on NBC’s Morning Staple
Roker joined Today in 1996, taking over the weather position earlier held by the late Willard Scott. Even after 30 years on air, the veteran meteorologist and journalist says his passion for the job continues to be as strong as when he initially entered into the role.“I think that’s the beauty of the broadcast is that the mission over these 74 years has not changed,” he described. “The way we bring it to you may have, and look, the fact of the matter is we are each temporary custodians of this legacy… at some point I won’t be part of the show, somebody else will be, but to be part of a pretty cool club is very special.”
How He Hopes Viewers Remember Him
As for how viewers might remember his time on air when he gradually leaves, Roker maintains his goal simple and personal.“People, when they watch, that they didn’t feel like I wasted their time. And that hopefully they felt better after watching than before.”
A Career Filled With Unforgettable Moments
Mirroring his time at Today, Roker shared one specific memorable experience from almost a decade ago.“I guess it was about 10 years ago in one 24-hour period out in California, I interviewed Don Rickles, Betty White, Carl Reiner and Dick Van Dyke, and it was like, wow, I’m a kid from Queens out doing this,” he stated.
