Team GB icon Sir Chris Hoy has provided a fresh health update as he makes remarkable progress after suffering a badly broken leg.
Back in November, the six-time Olympic cycling champion endured what he called his "worst crash ever" while out on his mountain bike, suffering numerous breaks to his lower leg and knee. Following urgent hospital treatment, he's been focused on his rehabilitation and getting mobile again, making an appearance at the World Darts Championship on crutches earlier this month.
The accident occurred as Hoy continues battling stage four cancer. He initially received his diagnosis in September 2023 and disclosed in October 2024 that his prognosis was terminal. Medical scans revealed primary cancer in his prostate that had spread to his bones, affecting his shoulder, pelvis, ribs and spine, with doctors estimating he had between two and four years left to live.

Posting clips from his hospital stay, Hoy demonstrated the severity of the swelling and bruising across his leg while confined to a bed in the major trauma unit before X-ray results confirmed he'd sustained multiple breaks in the accident. After having pins inserted into his leg and spending five days in hospital, he was discharged and continued his rehabilitation at home, undergoing physiotherapy sessions and mastering how to use crutches around the house.
Remarkably, Hoy climbed back onto the exercise bike just two weeks after going under the knife and, following a daily physiotherapy and exercise regime, he began partial weight bearing six weeks later. After 11 weeks, he was able to walk without crutches again, while he was back on his road bike and behind the wheel of a car at the 12-week mark.
Reflecting on the "rough ride", the Olympic icon wrote: "It's been a while! 12 weeks ago today I was having emergency surgery following a nasty crash on the mountain bike.
"It's been a rough ride since then. I had no idea how tough other people must have had it, with similar injuries to this. But with daily hard work, and @katieflatters expert physiotherapy guiding me through the rehab, along with @hayles.vicki's world class soft tissue treatment, I was able to get back out on the bike for the first time yesterday, in the fresh air.
"Recovery continues but this has taught me many things, not least that you can't second guess what might happen in life, and all you can do is control what you can. I am indebted to Katie and Vicki for the support, encouragement and commitment they have shown to me. Boys and their hobbies, eh?!"
Hoy thanked those who have supported him through his recovery, adding: "And when it goes wrong, look at the formidable team of women I had on my side to get me back on my feet. Surgeon, physio, massage and not least my wife who, as always, has helped me find a way through challenging times with love and humour.
"And then the boys. My mates, in particular @robhayles1, @jasonkenny107, @jasonqueally who dropped everything to come round, helping Sarra in the house, moving furniture, helping with lifts and transport and then simply keeping me company over the last 3 months the while I have been house bound. Thanks for all the visits and the laughs to keep my spirits up.
"Big thanks to @vernneville and @esp.wellness for helping set me up with @pulsefitness_official for the loan of specific gym equipment to help my rehab. Last but definitely not least; thank you to all the medical staff whose care and skill have got me back on my feet, I'm so grateful to each and every one of you."
