Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has expressed his joy at the current transformation at Old Trafford under Michael Carrick's stewardship - and reckons he saw it coming. The ex-midfielder served as first-team coach during McTominay's time with the Red Devils.

Carrick has now stepped up as head coach until the campaign concludes, with his opening two matches in the dugout restoring optimism at the club.A 2-0 triumph over neighbours Manchester City was backed up by a3-2 away success against table-toppers Arsenal.

Those consecutive victories have propelled United into fourth spot in the Premier League table. That's a position they'll be determined to maintain through to the season's end.

Discussing United, during a Napoli press conference, McTominay said: "Michael Carrick is such a great guy. I've got so much love and respect for him.

"Those two results vs Man City and Arsenal have been amazing, especially for me to watch. So I'm very, very proud of all the players and long may it continue."

McTominay added: "It doesn't surprise me. I wish him [Carrick] all the best. The first matches have been great. Let's hope it continues like that."

The remarks reveal just how keenly the Scotland international monitors his former side and arrive mere days after the club were urged to pursue his return to Old Trafford by their ex-striker Giuseppe Rossi. "It's all up to the coach," he said. "I feel that's all up in the air.

"You can't really go out and start buying players if you don't know the coaching situation. I always say McTominay because he would actually be a good player for Manchester United at this moment."
