EU Sanctions IRGC: There is currently serious tension in the diplomatic relations between Iran and Italy and relations between the two countries now seem to be reaching their lowest level. In this connection, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has summoned the Italian Ambassador and lodged a strong protest with him.

In fact, this step has been taken after the recent statement of Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, in which he demanded the European Union (EU) to declare Iran’s military wing Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. Iran has described Italy’s stance as interference in its internal affairs and against the country’s sovereignty.

Italy’s tough stance and references to demonstrations

Italy’s Foreign Minister Tajani has made it clear that he will strongly raise this issue at the EU Foreign Ministers’ meeting to be held in Brussels. Italy argues that the recent protests in Iran have resulted in the loss of a large number of civilian lives, which cannot be ignored. According to human rights organization HRANA, about 6,000 people have been confirmed dead in these protests so far, while thousands of other deaths are under investigation.

Iran’s ‘serious consequences’ warning of suffering

Iran called Italy’s initiative ‘wrong and dangerous’ Have agreed. The Director General of Western European Affairs of the Iranian Foreign Ministry has warned that if the IRGC is declared a terrorist, it will have serious consequences. Tehran has appealed to Italy to reconsider and improve its stance.

Challenge of consensus in EU

Declaring the Revolutionary Guards a terrorist organization is not such an easy decision for the European Union, because it requires the unanimity of all EU member states. At present, discussion is going on on this issue, but till now a uniform and clear consensus has not been reached among all the countries.

However, the European Union has already imposed a number of sanctions on Iran. These include restrictions to drone and missile technology, so that military activities can be prohibited.
