Car Safety Rules India: To give new strength to road safety in the country, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has Bharat NCAP 2.0 Draft notification has been issued. It has been named AIS-197 Revision 1 and is set to be implemented from October 2027. Till now, the safety rating of cars in India NCAP was mainly based on adult and child occupant protection, but with the new rules, the scope of safety has become much wider.
Now car safety check will be done in 5 categories
Under BNCAP 2.0, now before giving star rating to any car, its score in five different safety categories will be added. This simply means that now it will not be easy to get a 5-star rating just by having a stronger body or installing more airbags. The government wants the safety of every vehicle to be assessed with more depth and transparency.
Crash tests will be more stringent than before
In the new rules, the weightage of crash test has been kept at 55 percent, which is the highest. However, the difference is that now these tests will be more difficult and detailed than ever before. BNCAP 2.0 will include five mandatory crash tests, which will closely examine the car’s structure, impact after collision and safety of passengers. Due to this, car companies will have to further strengthen their platform and body structure.
Importance of ADAS features increased
Now the safety of the car will not be limited to just sheet metal and airbags. In the new rules, 10 percent score has been fixed for ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System). This includes features like Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist and Front Collision Warning, which aim to reduce the risk of an accident before it happens.
Special attention to pedestrians and bike riders
For the first time in BNCAP 2.0, the safety of pedestrians and two-wheeler drivers has also been seriously considered. The front design of the car will be tested so that there is less injury to the head and legs during a collision. Along with this, identification of pedestrians and bikes in the AEB system will also be included in the score. The weightage of this category has been kept at 20 percent.
What benefits will customers get?
After the implementation of Bharat NCAP 2.0, the level of car safety in India will completely change. The rules may be challenging for companies, but common customers will get safer, more reliable and value-for-money cars.
