One of the most difficult aspects of pet ownership is bidding farewell when they reach the end of their lives.

Even when our furry friends have lived long lives - or if they're finally being released from pain - it can be utterly heartbreaking. So to help combat this pain, a hospice vet has offered her words of wisdom.

Faith Banks says it's vital to provide tender and reassuring words during those final moments - regardless of how distressing it may be to witness your pets passing.

In a recent TikTok video, she explored the significant effect of final words on not only humans - but animals as well. She said "The last words you say to your pet are very special and very meaningful."

So what are some of the sweet phrases she tends to hear the most? And what should you avoid saying in your pets' final moments?

According to the veterinary specialist, animals can sense the emotion in heartfelt words spoken to them in their final moments.

She added: "I hear the final words many people say [to their pets] and they do stick with me. Many are the common or traditional things you'd think people would say - 'I love you, thank you, I'll miss you, see you again, wait for me'."

But there is one particular common phrase uttered by grieving pet owners that she wishes she would stop hearing.

She explained: ""I'm sorry' is one I don't love to hear because I feel that those people have done so much for their pet.

"I understand you're sorry you can no longer be together but I hope they're not apologising for anything they have done wrong."

Many pet owners found the TikTok video to be useful - and they took to the comments section to share their thoughts.

One user recalled: "I said 'It's okay, you can go now. Mama will be fine. ' I lied, I wasn't fine then, I am still not fine now. But he closed his eyes and took his final breath after my lie. I guess it was okay then."

Another said: "I believe the last words I said, were you better come back and see me so I know you're OK".

Meanwhile, a third wrote: "My 22 year old cat passed away this past Friday, in my arms. while I was holding him I spoke to him, that I loved him so much and that I was going to miss him and thanked him for his unconditional love."

Just remember - our pets will live on in our hearts and memories long after they pass away. Give yourself the time and grace to grieve properly and be sure to seek further support when needed.
