Loyal Dog: A moving rescue operation unfolded in Himachal Pradesh’s Bharmour region this week after disaster response personnel saved a pet dog that had remained beside its deceased owner for days in extreme winter conditions. The animal’s quiet vigil in sub-zero temperatures came to an end when teams finally reached the remote site following days of relentless snowfall.

Rescue operation captures emotional moment
The State Disaster Response Force carried out the rescue on Monday, several days after the incident occurred. Footage released by the force showed the Pit Bull emerging cautiously from a sack as personnel held it gently by the collar, ensuring the animal was not harmed during the operation. The visuals quickly drew attention for the calm yet poignant manner in which the rescue was conducted.
Officials involved said the dog appeared exhausted but alert, having endured severe cold and isolation at a high-altitude location where survival itself was a challenge.
Incident linked to missing cousins near temple
The tragedy took place near the Bharmani Temple area, a region known for difficult terrain and rapidly changing weather. Two cousins, identified as Bikshit Rana and Piyush, had gone missing after heading to the area to record videos. According to initial findings, the pair were caught in heavy snowfall after an abrupt weather shift and were unable to find their way back.
Search and rescue efforts began soon after they were reported missing. However, continuous snowfall and the risk posed by steep, icy slopes significantly delayed operations, forcing teams to wait for safer conditions before advancing.
Discovery after days of snowfall
Rescue teams, assisted by local villagers, reached the site four days later. What they encountered was both distressing and striking. Piyush’s body was found buried beneath multiple layers of snow, while his pet dog remained seated nearby, unmoved by the harsh surroundings.
Despite freezing winds, ongoing snowstorms, and the presence of wild animals common to the region, the dog had not abandoned the spot. Rescuers said the animal’s posture suggested it had been guarding the body continuously since the incident occurred.
Dog’s behavior reflected distress and loyalty
According to SDRF officials, the dog neither ate nor shifted from its position during the four-day period. When rescue workers initially approached to retrieve the body, the animal reacted defensively, interpreting the movement as a threat.
Team members said patience was essential. After repeated attempts involving calm gestures and careful reassurance, the dog gradually relaxed and allowed the rescuers to proceed. The animal was then safely removed from the area and taken to a secure location away from the freezing site.
Authorities ensure animal’s safety
After the operation, SDRF personnel confirmed that the dog was out of immediate danger and would be cared for. Officials noted that prolonged exposure to such conditions could have been fatal, making the timing of the rescue critical.
The incident has highlighted the challenges faced by rescue teams in high-altitude regions during winter, as well as the need for preparedness when weather conditions change without warning.
Fresh weather warning issued for the state
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has issued a fresh forecast for Himachal Pradesh, warning of continued unsettled weather. Light to moderate rain and snowfall are expected across most parts of the state, with heavier precipitation likely at isolated locations, particularly in higher elevations.
A bulletin from the Meteorological Centre in Shimla reported that several areas recorded rain and snow over the past 24 hours. Gondla saw the highest snowfall at 22 centimeters, followed by Kukumseri with 21.3 centimeters and Kothi with 20 centimeters. Bharmaur received the highest rainfall, measuring 14 millimeters.
Strong winds and storms reported
In addition to snowfall, gusty winds were observed in Kufri and Narkanda, with speeds reaching up to 52 kilometers per hour. Thunderstorms were also reported in Shimla, adding to the weather-related risks in the region.
Authorities have advised residents and travelers to remain cautious, especially in higher reaches, as fluctuating conditions continue to pose safety concerns.
