In Meerut, UP, the vigilance team arrested a junior engineer of the Irrigation Department red handed while taking a bribe of Rs 2 lakh on Tuesday afternoon. To pay for the construction work, Rs 3 lakh was demanded from the contractor as commission, out of which Rs 2 lakh was given on Tuesday. A total of Rs 10 lakh including an additional amount of Rs 8 lakh has been recovered from the car of the accused.

The firm of Dharam Singh, resident of Ganganagar, is registered in the name of DS Contractor. The work of the firm is looked after by his son Ankur Singh. Ankur’s firm had completed the work on Machhri Minor in December 2025. In lieu of this, Rs 4.32 lakh was paid to the firm by the Irrigation Department, while Rs 3.71 lakh was left. To release this amount, Brajraj Singh had asked for a bribe of Rs 3 lakh as commission. Ankur complained to the Vigilance Department, after which Brajraj was cordoned off on Tuesday.

Ankur reached Brajraj Singh’s office at 12 noon with two lakh rupees. Vigilance team arrested junior engineer Brajraj Singh while taking bribe. During the search, Rs 7 lakh 46 thousand were also recovered from Brajraj’s car and Rs 54 thousand from the pocket of the accused. A total of Rs 10 lakh has been recovered from the accused. A case of corruption has been registered against junior engineer Brajraj in Civil Line police station.

Vigilance caught after counting the bundles kept in the bag

As soon as Brajraj counted the wads of notes given by the contractor and kept them in his bag on Tuesday afternoon, the vigilance team raided and arrested the accused. Started videography and recovered the amount of Rs 2 lakh taken as bribe from Brajraj. The accused was brought to Civil Line police station. A case has been registered in Civil Line police station. The accused will be presented before the court on Wednesday.

Investigation has been started on the files recently passed by the accused junior engineer. The team kept scanning the files till evening. It is being ascertained why the report was being sent twice despite the work being completed and why no officer raised any objection regarding it. Contractor Ankur Singh had complained to the vigilance team against junior engineer Brajraj Singh of the Irrigation Department. Told that he was given the work of rehabilitation on Machhri Minor from about .800 km to 1.60 km.

A total of Rs 8 lakh was to be paid for this work, but junior engineer Brajraj had kept the file pending for a long time. Demanded bribe of Rs 3 lakh in the name of commission. The junior engineer had prepared and sent the report of completion of only half the work. After this report, a payment of Rs 4.32 lakh was made. Out of this amount, Brajraj was demanding Rs 3 lakh. Threatened that if the money was not given then payment would be received next year or it might not be received at all. Ankur complained to Vigilance, after which the operation was started.

7.46 lakhs found in the car

On Tuesday, the Vigilance team gave Ankur a note laced with chemicals and sent him to the office of Brajraj Singh in the office of the Executive Engineer. The team arrested Brajraj while taking two lakhs as bribe. When Brajraj’s car was searched, Rs 7.46 lakh and Rs 54 thousand were found in his pocket. Vigilance team had gone to recover Rs 2 lakh and an amount of Rs 8 lakh was recovered.

Information was given to top officials in Lucknow. A team camped in the office of the accused and started going through all the files. It is being ascertained which files were passed by Brajraj recently. It is being seen which officers’ role is with accused Brajraj Singh. The team remained engaged in investigation at Brajraj Singh’s office and residence till around 7.30 pm.
