He worked as a mentor for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for two seasons before he joined Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the same capacity. He led KKR to the IPL 2024 title this time through his collaboration with Shreyas Iyer and Chandrakant Pandit.

The BCCI quickly selected Gambhir who then established his preferred support staff. The team removed Abhishek Nayar after his underwhelming performance at Border Gavaskar Trophy but Morne Morkel Ryan ten Doeschate and Sitanshu Kotak stayed with Gambhir. His coaching period brought India to their most disastrous moments. The two-time World Cup champion will face termination if India fails to win the T20 World Cup 2026 tournament under his leadership. The prediction originated from Gambhir's ex-teammate who played for India Manoj Tiwary. Tiwary told Insidesport that the BCCI will remove Gambhir if India fails to defend their T20 World Cup crown. The Indian team faces a challenge which no other team has ever successfuly accomplished. T20 cricket remains unpredictable because any team can achieve an unexpected victory against India.

Manoj Tiwary Commented: “If Gautam Gambhir fails to win the T20 World Cup 2026, then BCCI should take a big and difficult decision. BCCI secretary has said that we will pursue with Gambhir till his contract expires. But if the T20 World Cup 2026 doesn’t give a result to Gambhir, I think BCCI will take a big call and will remove him.”

The Suryakumar Yadav-led team needs to win the March 9 trophy because India has a strong team which performs exceptionally well in T20 matches. The BCCI will initiate severe consequences for Gambhir if that situation occurs. Tiwary believes VVS Laxman should replace him in that situation.

Tiwary explained Laxman should take over because he maintains his composure and has achieved success as NCA head according to Tiwary.
