Siri: After a long wait, Apple's 'Gemini-powered' Siri update could arrive in February; find out what's special about it?

Apple has been talking about a smarter Siri for quite some time. Expectations have been high ever since the announcement of 'Apple Intelligence'. However, in reality, there hasn't been any significant change in the Siri experience yet. Now, a new report suggests that this long wait is finally coming to an end.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is preparing to roll out a Gemini-powered Siri update as early as February. Siri was launched in 2010 and seemed ahead of its time. But in recent years, as generative AI has taken off, Apple's voice assistant has fallen behind. Competitors like ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini have proven far superior in understanding context and engaging in natural conversations.

At WWDC 2024, Apple promised that the next generation of Siri would understand users better and work more deeply within apps. However, reports suggest that Apple internally faced delays with its own AI models.

Partnership with Google Gemini
Instead of building everything from scratch, Apple decided to partner with Google and use Gemini as the foundation for Siri's intelligence upgrade. It's reported that Apple also considered options with OpenAI and Anthropic, but these didn't materialize due to cost and strategic concerns. Gemini's rapid improvements and flexible terms made it a better fit for Apple. Apple will still present Siri as part of its 'Apple Intelligence' system, but the underlying AI power will come from Gemini.

February Rollout: What to Expect?
According to the report, Apple plans to announce the updated Siri with iOS 26.4 in the second half of February. The update is expected to go into beta testing around the same time and be widely released to the public in March or early April. Internally, this version is reportedly running on 'Apple Foundation Model version 10,' with Gemini working in the background via Apple's 'Private Cloud Compute' infrastructure.

This won't be a full-fledged chatbot just yet. Instead, the focus of the February update is on practical improvements. The new Siri is expected to better understand what's on your screen, remember personal context, and handle tasks more smoothly across apps. Summarizing messages, extracting information from emails, or handling multi-step requests should feel more natural and less frustrating than before. However, the real transformation may come later this year. According to reports, Apple plans to introduce a fully conversational, 'chatbot-style' Siri with iOS 27 at WWDC 2026. That version will support longer conversations and directly compete with modern AI assistants.
