Charges framed against three including former Chief Minister Champai Soren, trial begins in 1993 blast case

Ranchi: Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and Seraikela MLA Champai Soren appeared in the court of First Additional District and Sessions Judge Vinod Kumar of Chaibasa Court in the nearly 33-year-old case of Blast Act. Charges were framed against the three surviving accused in the case, Champai Soren, Shyamnand Tudu alias Doctor Tudu and Arun Mahato. Now the trial against all three will go on in the court.

The case is to the blast that took place during the bandh called by Jharkhand Mukti Morcha on 18 September 1993. MLA Champai Soren declared himself innocent before the court. Said to face judicial process in the matter. Six accused have died in this case. The court has framed charges under sections 4, 5 and 6 of the Explosive Substances Act, 1908, and sections 120B (conspiracy) and 201 (destroying/concealing evidence) of the Indian Penal Code.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren returned to Ranchi after a 10-day foreign tour, JMM workers gave a warm welcome at the airport.
The number of accused has decreased over a long period of time

Senior advocate Amresh Saav associated with the case informed that this case was registered under Gamharia police station case number 62/1993. In the initial phase, many people were made accused in this case. But with the passage of time, most of the accused have passed away. The dead accused include the names of Dev Charan Goswami, Don, Somay Modi, Jogeshwar Tudu, Sanatan Gorai and Devpal Gorai. At present only three accused remain in the judicial process.
