This relationship is not just that of neighbour, but also of unbreakable defense partnership. NORAD is the lifeblood of this partnership. What is the matter? What is the role of F-35? F-35 fighter jet is counted among the world’s most modern, i.e. fifth generation fighter aircraft. America and its major allies ensure their air security using this jet. Now Canada also had to buy F-35 jets to replace its old fleet (old fighter planes), so that the NORAD system could be upgraded. Canada kept delaying the purchase of these jets for many years, or rather, could not take the right decision on it. A few years ago, they had also decided to buy aircraft of other companies. This is where the real trouble started. When NORAD’s armor was under threat. NORAD is the joint command center of these two countries, which protects the North American Airspace 24 hours a day. Its job is to see that no foreign aircraft, missile or drone enters their territory. NORAD’s strength is complete only when its member countries, i.e. America and Canada, use similar technology and platforms. If Canada does not buy or delays the purchase of the fifth generation advanced F-35 fighter aircraft, it means that there will be a technology gap in NORAD. The US will protect with its most modern jets, while Canada will protect with older or less capable jets. In such a situation, there may be a delay in identification of enemies and retaliatory action against them. Why did the former ambassador give this sharp warning? This tension was fueled by former US ambassador Peter Hoekstra. He made a very direct and scathing comment on this issue. He clearly said that if Canada does not quickly finalize the F-35 deal and does not fulfill its responsibility, it will not only jeopardize the future of NORAD, but will also have a direct impact on North America’s defense operations. His concern was clear: delay or failure in this deal could have a negative impact on the US-Canada Defense Relationship and trust. At present, it remains to be seen when the Canadian government will consider the seriousness of this security agreement. Implements its entire plan regarding F-35.
