New Delhi: Record 15-time champions Real Madrid slumped to a 4-2 defeat to Benfica to miss out on automatic qualification for the Champions League knockout rounds while holders Paris St Germain also suffered the same fate after a 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle United on a dramatic final night of the group-stage action.
PSG and Newcastle were slooted in automatic places but after their draw slipped out of it as did Madrid, despite Kylian Mbappe’s goal had put them ahead.
They needed a win to secure a top-eight finish, but Benfica, managed by Real’s former coach Jose Mourinho, fought back but still stared at elimination while leading 3-2.
But goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin headed in their fourth goal in the 98th-minute, whoch ensured they remained alive on goal difference to battle in the playoffs.
