Tibetan Youth: Congress marked Tibetan Language Day on Wednesday in Dharamshala, observing the 37th anniversary of the death of the 10th Panchen Lama. The commemoration focused on recognising his lasting efforts to safeguard the Tibetan language, culture, and collective identity at a time of mounting challenges for the community.

Remembering a Symbol of Cultural Preservation

The observance was held in memory of the 10th Panchen Lama, a senior Tibetan religious leader widely regarded for his outspoken advocacy within Tibet. The Tibetan Youth Congress has long credited him with raising concerns about policies that, in its view, threatened the survival of Tibetan linguistic and cultural traditions. His passing, which remains a subject of uncertainty, continues to resonate deeply among Tibetans both inside and outside the region.

Panel Discussion Highlights Language Concerns

As part of the day’s programme, the organisation hosted a panel discussion in Dharamshala, bringing together scholars and community members to examine the current state of the Tibetan language. Speakers discussed the role of language in preserving identity and the responsibility of institutions and individuals to ensure its continued use across generations. The discussion emphasised education, literature, and community engagement as key tools in sustaining linguistic heritage.

Outreach Through Universities Across India

In addition to the Dharamshala event, the Tibetan Youth Congress coordinated university-based programmes in several Indian cities, including Varanasi, Mangalore, and Delhi. These initiatives were designed to engage students and academics, creating space for dialogue on the importance of linguistic diversity and cultural rights. Organisers said universities were chosen deliberately to reach younger Tibetans and to involve the broader academic community in the conversation.

Leadership Reflections on the Panchen Lama’s Legacy

Speaking to ANI, Tibetan Youth Congress President Tsering Chomphel said the organisation began formally observing Tibetan Language Day after passing a resolution in 2018. The decision, he explained, was intended to express gratitude for the Panchen Lama’s contributions and sacrifices. Chomphel described him as a central figure who worked persistently to protect Tibetan language and culture despite political constraints.

Focus on Youth and Academic Engagement

General Secretary Tenzin Lobsang noted that this year’s programmes placed special emphasis on universities. He said engaging students was essential for sustaining awareness and encouraging informed discussion on language preservation. According to Lobsang, panel discussions with scholars from different regions helped present a broad perspective on the challenges facing the Tibetan language today.

Concerns Over Language Policies in Tibet

Lobsang also warned of what he described as increasing pressure on the Tibetan language under current policies in Tibet. He recalled that the Panchen Lama had, decades earlier, raised concerns about education models that could weaken linguistic and cultural roots. Lobsang said recent moves toward a single-language framework risk marginalising minority languages and eroding long-established cultural identities.

Annual Observance Rooted in a 2018 Resolution

The Tibetan Youth Congress formally resolved in 2018 to observe Tibetan Language Day each year on the Panchen Lama’s death anniversary. The organisation views the annual commemoration as both a tribute and a reminder of the ongoing need to protect linguistic and cultural heritage. By linking remembrance with education and discussion, the group aims to keep the issue relevant for future generations.
